TO CELEBRATE WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH (WHM), during the month of March ~ in addition to my weekly postings ~ I will be making DAILY postings of time tested herbal and medicinal foods used from a Medicine Woman's bag, which holds many, many herbs, generating many, many formulas, as one herb used for a cold (mullein), when combined with totally different herbs, can be used as an antispasmodic for inflammation or as an expectorant to relieve asthma or general lung congestion.

Sex Symbols I : Stock PhotoThis last week of March I will dedicate to OUR MEN.  Women's History Month would not be complete without addressing some health and healing issues for our men. During the 4+ years that I've been writing my weekly column on herbs and healing alternatives, most of my articles have been for men and women alike, but most specific articles are usually directed towards women's issues.  Yes, we have more health concerns then men, but this last week will focus on male issues - though ironically, out of the top ten causes of male deaths, only one is male organ specific: prostate cancer.  The other nine are suffered by women as well, but happen less frequently to women than men.

The Men's Health Network (MHN) reports that men die at higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death - heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, accidents, pneumonia and influenza, diabetes, suicide, kidney disease, and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. Next on our list of 5 top killers of men: CANCER.

Pau d'Arco
Critics of alternative treatment modalities for cancer complain about lack of credible research and double-blind studies. The true problem is there is little emphasis on prevention because it involves a series of radical considerations of our lifestyle, food chain, water consumption and environmental issues overall. But we CAN envision a cure with wholesome diet, herbs, and lifestyle changes.

Golden Seal (Hydrastis)
Basically, cancer is a weakening of the immune system that causes the mutation of cells that eventually colonize, destroy and displace healthy tissues, eventually leading to death.

Red Clov
The immune system involves many complex functions that ORIGINATE WITH DIGESTION, so that the proper assimilation of the proper foods are fundamental to strengthening and maintaining a healthy immune system. Though precancerous cells can be inherited, most cell mutations are weaker than healthy cells and simply die. Those that don't are regulated by a HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM, and until the requisite number of mutations occurs in life, cancer will not develop. There are physiological mechanisms in a healthy organism that can and do inhibit the invasion of viruses, and there are herbs such as bloodroot, hydrastis (golden seal), pau d'arco, burdock, red clover, poke root and dandelion, to name a few, that have anticancer properties and are effective in overcoming viruses and harmful bacteria.

Blood Root
It is very rare for cancer to have only one cause. Rather than simply being caused by a malfunction in your DNA, or a faulty gene you “inherited” from a grandparent, cancer is more typically triggered by a combination of things: nutritional deficiencies, toxins in your body/environment, emotional conflicts and hormonal imbalances. As we stated last week, most often cancer can actually be treated, and reversed, by addressing these variables through dietary changes, purifying your environment, and addressing your emotional state.

No one wants to battle cancer, and I believe you can VIRTUALLY ELIMINATE your risk of cancer and chronic disease, and radically improve your chances of recovering from cancer if you currently have it, by following these 12 relatively simple risk reduction strategies.

Poke Root (berries and leaves are also medicinal)
  1. Reduce or eliminate your processed food, sugar and grain carbohydrate intake. Yes, this is even true for whole unprocessed organic grains, as they tend to rapidly break down and drive your insulin and leptin levels up, which is the last thing you need to have happening if you are seeking to resolve a cancer.

2. Control your fasting insulin and leptin levels.  This is the end result, and can be easily monitored with the use of simple and relatively inexpensive blood tests.

3. Normalize your ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fats by taking a high-quality krill oil and reducing your intake of most processed vegetable oils.

4. Get regular exercise.

5. Normalize your vitamin D levels by getting plenty of sunlight exposure and consider careful supplementation when this is not possible.

6. Get regular, good sleep.

7. Eat according to your nutritional type. The potent anti-cancer effects of this principle are very much under-appreciated.

8. Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners and air pollution.

9. Limit your exposure and provide protection for yourself from information-carrying radio waves produced by cell phone towers, base stations, phones and WiFi stations.

10. Avoid frying or charbroiling your food. Boil, poach or steam your foods instead.

11. Have a tool to permanently reprogram the neurological short-circuiting that can activate cancer genes. Even the CDC states that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotions. It is likely that this factor may be more important than all the other physical ones listed here, so try to address this.

12. Eat at least one-third of your food raw.

TO JUMPSTART YOUR DAILY ENERGY LEVEL and to automatically flush toxins from your system: drink a full glass of room temperature Alkaline water within 20min of waking and another glass within the next hour; another 5-6 glasses throughout the day.
