Herb Uses for Men, Women and Children

HERBS ARE NATURE’S MEDICINE . . . .

Each family of plants has its own peculiar habit of taking from the soil a specific group of chemical elements that give it its specific healing properties.  It is the chemical constituent 'tannin' in herbs like White Oak Bark (main 'natural' ingredient in aspirin), Kudzu (also used as a soup thickener), Uva Ursi (widely used in UTI's and many female urinary disorders) that facilitates their tightening (contract tissue and arrest discharge) action as styptics (stops bleeding) and vulneraries (helps wounds heal).

When the pancreas are not able to produce sufficient insulin to convert glucose's sugar into energy in the cells (diabetes), the glucose then continues to circulate and accumulate in the blood, which can become very dangerous for diabetics.  A number of organs are affected by diabetes: kidney, pancreas, spleen, liver and gall bladder. Herbs like uva ursi, parsley root, gentian root, red raspberry leaves, buchu leaves, saw palmetto berries, kelp and bladder wrack all contain chemical ingredients that promote the body's ability to reduce high blood sugar.

Spring and Summer seem to be the time for new births, new Moms and lots of questions about natural remedies for all.  Here are a few herbal suggestions for Mom and babies, from conception, birth, and through toddler-age.

Every young girl starting her menses should start drinking a cup of red raspberry tea regularly, for the rest of her life – as it will forever tone, harmonize and 'shore up' her reproductive system.  Hot in the winter and as a cool iced drink in the summer.

Starting from pre-conception, we can use herbs like lady's mantle, red raspberry, wild yam, cramp bark, damiana, and false unicorn in various combinations to prepare our bodies for pregnancy, increase fertility and to secure the fetus in the womb.

To help Mom’s milk flow, herbs like anise seed, blessed thistle, fennel and parsley (as a hot compress on the breasts) are used.

Catnip has been used to calm nervous/hyperactive children since ancient times; also to bring relief to babies and young children for expelling wind, or curing hiccups and stomach spasms (colic), used along with chamomile, lemon balm, valerian and/or lady's slipper, as relaxers to soothe their nerves.

Echinacea has great antiseptic qualities as it cleanses the blood, destroys bacteria and can be used following childbirth to relieve post-partum imbalances.

MEN'S HEALTH – Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men. There is not enough known about what causes prostate cancer and how to prevent it. Yet the disease is treatable if found in early stages.   This can be a challenge, since prostate cancer can show no symptoms until it has spread to other parts of the body. STAY AHEAD OF THE GAME – GET AN ANNUAL CHECK UP (+PROSTATE SCREENING).

If you begin to feel any of the above symptoms here are a few herbal tea suggestions (take 2-5 cups daily, for mild-to-acute conditions):

Urinary tract infection: Black walnut bark-1/4pt, buchu leaves-1pt, chaparral-1/2pt, echinacea-1/4pt, plantain-1pt, wild yam root-1/4pt, uva ursi-1pt, marshmallow-1/2pt.

Men younger than 50 who have a bladder infection should see a doctor to determine the cause (since it is so rare). Men over 50 with recurring bladder infections most likely need to address their prostate health while also dealing with the acute infection.

Prostate cancer: buchu leaves-1pt, juniper berries-1/4pt, echinacea-1/2pt, golden seal-1/4pt, chaparral-1pt, kelp-1/2pt, sarsaparilla-1pt, uva ursi-1pt, wild yam root-1/4pt, yellow dock-1pt, yarrow-1/2pt, black walnut bark-1/2pt.

Painful urination: buchu leaves-1pt, juniper berries-1/2pt, marshmallow-1pt, uva ursi-1pt, plantain-1pt, yarrow-1/2pt.

CAUTION – do not take juniper berries if you have any type of kidney disease or infection. If any of these conditions present, see your doctor immediately. Continued long term use of these formulas is not suggested.
