COMMON FOODS Most of us Refrigerate But Should Not

20 Common Foods You Should Not Refrigerate

There are times when the labels on the foods tell us clearly whether we need to keep the food item in the fridge or not. But what happens in other cases when you need to guess what to do? You may be surprised that in many cases you guessed wrong. In fact, storing certain foods in the fridge can change their flavor or texture, or speed up their deterioration and make them moldy.
Many of us actually store some of the foods mentioned below in the fridge, whereas they are really best kept on the kitchen counter or in the pantry.
Here is your guide for storing 20 common foods:

Vegetables

1. Tomatoes – If tomatoes are stored in the fridge, they start to lose their flavor and texture. Keep them on the counter out of the plastic bag in a bowl or a basket. If you want them to ripen faster, keep them on the counter in a paper bag. If they become over-ripe, it’s time to cook them to make a tomato sauce. You can also read my article how to fight cancer and heart disease with tomatoes.
2. Potatoes – Refrigerating potatoes will change their flavor as the starch brakes down, and you will get sweet and gritty potatoes. Store them in a paper bag in a cool dark place like your pantry or a cupboard (plastic bags trap moisture and promote mold).
3. Onions – Storing onions in the fridge can make them moldy and soft because of the humidity in the fridge. It is best to store onions in a paper bag or in mesh bag in a cool dark and well ventilated Don’t keep the onions near the potatoes, because if stored together, the onions will rot faster. Once you cut the onions or slice them, they can be stored in a sealed container in the vegetable drawer in your fridge.
4. Garlic – Storing garlic in the fridge can make it moldy so it deteriorates faster. It can also make it sprout, so it is best to store garlic in a cool, dark and well ventilated. If you love garlic, read my article how to use garlic as a medicine.
5. Winter squashes – winter squashes such as butternut, spaghetti, acorn and delicata are best to be kept at room temperature in the pantry.

Fruits

6. Bananas – Green bananas should be kept at room temperature, as refrigerating them prevents proper ripening. Ripe bananas should be kept at room temperature in you intend to eat them within a few days. If spots start to develop on the skin and you don’t want the bananas to over-ripe, store them in the produce drawer of your refrigerator after they are fully ripe. The banana skin will continue to turn brown, but the fruit inside will remain firm and perfect to eat. Find here 7 good reasons to eat bananas.
7. Melon & watermelon – Whole melons and watermelons have the best flavor when kept on the counter at room temperature. Once they are cut, store in the fridge. Also read my article about 13 reasons to eat watermelon.
8. Apples – refrigerating fresh whole apples will affect their taste and texture over time, so they can be stored them on the counter if you intend to eat them within a week or two. To keep them longer than that, you will need to refrigerate them.
9. Citrus fruits - Most citrus fruits like oranges and lemons will keep at room temperature in a cool dark place for several days or about a week. After one week store them in the produce drawer in your fridge.
10. Stone fruits – unripe stone fruits such as peaches, nactarines, apricots and plums are best to ripen at room temperature. Once they are ripe, eat them or store in the fruit drawer to increase their longevity.
11. Avocado – Unripe avocados should be left at room temperature. Once they are ripe and you don’t want to eat them right away, keep them in the fridge. Find here 11 healthy reasons to eat avocado and what to do with the pit.
12. Dried fruits – No need to refrigerate them.

Oils

13. Oils – Oils don’t need to be refrigerated as it will make them thick, harder and cloudy. They should be kept in a cool dark place. Also read my article about the best cooking oils for healthy heart.

Grains

14. Bread – Refrigerating bread will make it dry. If you intend to eat the bread within a few days, store it on the counter and freeze the rest. You may also want to have a look at my previous article about 8 scary ingredients you didn’t know where in your bread.
15. Nuts – Nuts can be stored in a cool, dark place, or if you buy bulk nuts, refrigerate them to increase their life shelf. Read about the amazing health benefits of nuts and seeds here.

Herbs & Spices

16. Fresh herbs – You don’t need to refrigerate fresh herbs as they lose flavor, get dry and absorb smells of the food around them. It’s better to keep them on the counter in a cup of fresh water. If you want however to store them in a fridge, make sure to store them in an air tight container. If you are interested in herbal remedies, you can find more useful information in my e-book the Herbal Remedies Guide. This e-book will teach you how to treat common ailments using herbs.
17. Spices – Ground spices don’t need to be refrigerated. Store them in airtight containers in cool dry places. The airtight containers will protect them from moisture and oxidation.

Other

18. Coffee – Coffee will lose its flavor and absorb odors if kept in the fridge. Store coffee in an air tight container in a cool dark place. Find here how to clean your coffee maker to prevent mold in it.
19. Honey – You don’t need to store honey in the fridge as it can cause it to harden and crystallize. Store in cool, dry area, away from direct sunlight and keep tightly covered. Also read my article about 13 ways to use honey for your health.
20. Peanut butter – you don’t need to refrigerate an opened jar of commercially manufactured peanut butter. Just store it in a dark place at normal room temperature and it will last for about 3 months. Refrigerating it will extend shelf life to additional 3-4 months. As for natural homemade peanut butter, if you plan to consume it within a month or so, you don’t need to refrigerate it, but keep it in cool place.

TRY MY HERB HONEY (TRIPHALA) to reduce cholesterol, improve circulation, reduces hi-blood pressure, is anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory . . . . etc.

TRIPHALA is one of the most amazing herbal formulas I learned about when studying under Michael Tierra in California while earning my degree as a certified herbalist.  I have since taken that Ayurvedic formula and made it into one of my special HERB HONEY formulas!!!
To understand Triphala’s powerful herbal healing impact, you need to look at its contents and their effects on your whole body balance. The name Triphala actually means “the three fruits” and it’s comprised of the Indian fruits amalaki, haritaki, and bibhitaki.
Amalaki (emblica officinalis) is an Ayurvedic treasure in itself and widely used. This Indian gooseberry is one of Ayurveda’s prized rejuvenators since ancient times. It’s been shown to help lower cholesterol and is loaded with vitamin C. While appropriate for all body-type constitutions (doshas) it’s particularly effective for balancing the Pitta Dosha.
Haritaki (terminalia chebula) is known as the Tibetan "king of medicine." Many depictions of the healing Buddha show him extending a handful of this fruit indicating its longstanding medicinal usage in Asia. It’s believed to have a variety of positive health effects on the heart and brain. It can be used as a laxative by itself, but also has an anti-diarrheal treatment. It’s an anti-inflammatory and is calming to the Vata Dosha.
Bibhitaki (terminalia belerica) is another powerful ancient rejuvenator with detoxifying qualities on the blood, muscles, and fatty tissue of the body. Bibhitaki is very useful with conditions involving excess mucous in the system and is also good for quality bone formation. This fruit is known as “the one who keeps away disease” owing its name to the multiple benefits it has on the Kapha Dosha.

Ancient literatures for ayurvedic medicine have mentioned Triphala as blood cleanser tonic, a gentle laxative and highly praised for it regulatory processes for digestion as well as elimination. It can be used directly or in some formula, and plays a significant part for treating a great number of conditions. It is designated as Rasayana by ayurvedic medicine; a term in Sanskrit, meaning a medicine that can improve health and leads in longevity of life. Triphala is very safe and has high values so effective that some of the ayurvedic practitioners say a good aphorism for it “When you have a doubt, just take Triphala”. It has all types of tastes except salt, promoting a balanced state between all the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha).*
Each of the components contained in Triphala specifies an activity that is associated with a dosha. Amla fruit is a rasayana used for Pitta (inflammation), Bibhitaki is a rasayana for Kapha (congestion) and Harikati is a rasayana for Vata (degeneration). It is considered as Malashodhana (means removing of mal/toxic-wastes). Sometimes toxins, due to poor digestion, are not flushed from the body and get collected in body. Few symptoms associated with toxins accumulation are: thick greasy tongue coating, poor appetite, constipation, pains in joints, indigestion, headaches, orbital edema, congestion in sinus, feeling cold, mental confusion, lethargy. Using Triphala daily helps in body detoxification and restores the integration of digestive tract, bringing perfect balance in body with its wound-healing (astringent), digestive, soothing (demulcent), as well as laxative properties.*
A lot of research work has been carried out in India on Triphala. The research indicates the potential properties of triphala as a detoxifying medium as well as anti-cancer association. Scientists of Radiation Biology and Health Sciences Division at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre have found the abilities of triphala for inducing cell death (cytotoxicity) of only the tumor cells sparing normal ones.*
  • Assists in gently maintaining regularity by cleansing and toning of intestinal tract*.
  • Natural internal cleansing, improvements of digestion as well as assimilation.*
  • Promotes proper blood circulation and blood pressure.*
  • Nourishes both body and mind.*
  • Acting as an expectorant, it diverticulosis and supports liver.*
  • Effective for cleansing the bowels, colon, etc.*
  • Believed to posses anti-viral & anti-inflammatory properties, also stimulates the flow of bile and pristalsis.*
  • Promoteing anti-aging, immunity imparting and mental faculty improvements are some of the other benefits.*
  • Beneficial for eye sight problems.*
  • Promotes weight reduction when consumed throughout a prolonged period.*
  • Non habit-forming, helps with occasional constipation and does not disturb the intestinal flora*

KIDNEY STONES AND PREGNANCY

What Every Woman Should Know

Pregnant women can get kidney stonesKidney stones affect both the mother and the unborn baby, negatively impacting health, development, and delivery. Now, being pregnant doesn’t necessarily increase the chances you’re going to develop kidney stones, but it is important to note that being pregnant can increase the difficulty in remedying them… and every pregnant, or may-become pregnant, woman should pay special attention to habits that discourage kidney stones.

Why Should Pregnant Women Be Aware of Kidney Stones?

Aside from being extremely painful, kidney stones can affect the fetus and complicate birth — sometimes even causing preterm labor. Addressing kidney stones early is absolutely vital for drastically reducing the likelihood of premature delivery.

What Causes Kidney Stones?

There are a variety of factors that contribute to kidney stones, including:

Fluid Intake

Not consuming enough water will tend to promote urine that is highly concentrated with nutrients like calcium or phosphorus, dramatically increasing the risk for developing kidney stones.

Your Genes

Genetic factors also play a role in kidney stone formation. Families who have a high incidence of hypercalciuria, a condition where an abnormal amount of calcium is leached out into the urine, will have a heightened risk for developing kidney stones.

Bowel Irritation

If gastrointestinal sensitivity is a problem for you, take note. Chronic inflammation of the bowels can increase your risk for developing kidney stones, especially during pregnancy.

Calcium Intake

Pregnant women typically need additional nutrients, including calcium. Too much calcium, however, can strain the kidneys. Additionally, calcium absorption is increased during pregnancy. Both of these factors can elevate the risk for developing stones.

UTIs

Anatomical and physiological changes during pregnancy can increase a woman’s risk of developing kidney stones. Chronic and persistent urinary tract infections may be a symptom of kidney stones. Pregnant women who suffer from UTIs should mention and discuss the problem with their healthcare provider.

What to do?

For most people, a stone is a painful experience; yet, around 70-80% of stones pass spontaneously without intense medical intervention. If an aggressive approach is required, surgery may be considered or even required.

X-rays

X-rays are a method of choice for determining stone presence; however, most health professionals discourage their use during pregnancy. Radiation is emitted from X-ray machines, possibly affecting the developing fetus. Currently, very little research is available to determine the exact effects radiation has on both the mother and the unborn child. With the risks of surgery and anesthesia, not to mention the risk of radiation exposure, minimally-invasive approaches are often the best course of action for pregnant women.

Ureteroscopy

A ureteroscopy involves placing a thin tube in the urethra to the site of the kidney stones, effectively removing them from the body.  As the complication rate for ureteroscopy during pregnancy is relatively low, it’s no wonder why physicians are becoming increasingly fond of using this stone-removal method.

Shockwaves

Shockwave therapy uses sound waves to target and fragment stones and is a highly-utilized, minimally-invasive treatment.  While it’s safe for most people, it’s not clear if it’s a viable option for pregnant women.  The effects of sound waves on the developing fetus is too much of a risk, and most researchers and experts discourage the practice.

Patience

Conservative management like bed rest and hydration can encourage stone passage. Medications aren’t good during pregnancy as most are contraindicated as the use of drugs may interfere with fetal health.
